EA reportedly looking to sell or merge

Electronic Arts could be the next big video game company to be acquired. According to Puck, EA has reportedly held talks with several companies, including Disney, Apple, and Amazon, and is either looking to sell up or merge.

As Puck claims, EA has grown “emboldened in the wake of the Microsoft-Activision deal,” and the company has been “persistent in pursuing a sale,” holding talks with Disney, Apple, Amazon, and NBCUniversal.

EA reportedly negotiated with NBCUniversal over a merger

Out of these talks, it’s argued that a deal with NBCUniversal progressed the furthest, with Comcast CEO Brian Roberts allegedly approaching EA CEO Andrew Wilson “with a proposal to spin off NBCUniversal and merge the media and gaming giants.” Negotiations reportedly went on for weeks before falling apart last month “due to disagreements over price and structure.” It remains unclear if talks are ongoing with any of the other companies supposedly involved.

A spokesperson from Comcast declined to comment, while EA told Puck that it wouldn’t comment “on rumours and speculation” regarding mergers and acquisitions before adding: “We are proud to be operating from a position of strength and growth, with a portfolio of amazing games, built around powerful IP, made by incredibly talented teams, and a network of more than half a billion players. We see a very bright future ahead.”

In other mergers and acquisitions news, Microsoft president Brad Smith recently revealed that the Activision Blizzard acquisition is “moving fast.” Rumors were also recently swirling about a Ubisoft takeover, with several private equity firms reportedly interested in the French publisher.
