Derby (Kan.) high school four-star running back Dylan Edwards it the latest class of 2023 to commit to Notre Dame. He announced his decision live Saturday afternoon on the 247Sports YouTube page.
The 5-9, 165-pounder narrowed his recruitment to Notre Dame, Oregon and Kansas State, which is the school he was once committed to, but decided that playing for the Fighting Irish is what he wanted most. Edwards connected well with running backs coach Deland McCullough, quickly setup a visit to South Bend after landing an offer in July, and committed before leaving campus. The Irish wanted to add more speed to their roster and Edwards is going to bring all that and more to the Fighting Irish football program.
In Edwards, Notre Dame is getting an alpha personality, a dude, if you will. This is a young man that is super confident in his abilities, believes he’s the best player on the field every time the lights come on and more often than not he backs it up with his play. He rushed for over 2,600 yards last season and nearly 40 scores. He can absolutely fly. He beat two elite speedsters, Zachariah Branch and Peyton Bowen, in a foot race at the Future 50 camp this offseason. He’s a do-it-all type of talent as well. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, line up in the slot or even out wide. He has elite burst and feet. He possesses breakaway speed, can pull away from defenders and has exceptional change of direction. The thing I like the most is his balance and ability to embrace any and all contact, despite the fact that he’s small in stature and still needs to add plenty of good weight in the coming years.
Edwards joins four-star running back Jayden Limar on the Notre Dame commit list. The two-headed monster is exactly what McCullough was searching for this cycle. However, they aren’t done yet. They are also looking to land four-star running back / receiver Jeremiah Love, who remains a top target for the Fighting Irish. McCullough, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and head coach Marcus Freeman will continue pushing hard to land the offensive weapon.
247Sports national analyst Allen Trieu is high on Edwards and believes the Irish landed a good one in the explosive back.
“Dylan Edwards is a dynamic player who has verified speed and change of direction as well as high school productivity,” said Trieu. status with 247. The only thing he doesn’t have is prototypical size but he has everything else and I can see him having a similar to career to Kyren Williams, another back who wasn’t big but was versatile and productive. Edwards probably gives the Irish a little more in terms of home run potential also.”
Per 247Sports, Edwards is the No. 16 running back in the country and No. 3 recruits in Kansas. The 247Sports Composite Rankings list him as the No. 19 running back nationally and No. 2 talent in his home state from the 2023 class.
