Ron Roberts is named Auburn’s defense coordinator

Hugh Freeze announced through the Auburn sports information department on Wednesday that Ron Roberts is the new Auburn defensive coordinator.

Roberts has 11 years of experience as a collegiate head coach at Delta State and Southeastern Louisiana and was the defensive coordinator at Baylor for the last three seasons.

“Ron has been a very successful defensive coach spanning three decades and multiple stops,” Freeze said via press release. “His defenses have always been aggressive and put a lot of pressure on opposing offenses. Ron is a great fit for what we are wanting to do on both sides of the ball, and we are excited to have his experience and expertise leading our defensive unit.”

Roberts led the defense at Baylor during the 2021 Big 12 championship season for the Bears. The defense led the conference in interceptions (19), turnovers gained (27), turnover margin (0.93), and defensive touchdowns (3). Additionally, Baylor finished second in the Big 12 run defense (118.4 yards per game), scoring defense (18.3 Pere Game Points), pass efficiency defense (121.54), and sacks per game (3.14).

“I want to thank Coach Freeze for the opportunity to join his staff at Auburn and want to help bring championships to Auburn,” Roberts said via press release. “Historically, Auburn has been known for tough, hard-nosed defenses and we want to create that mindset with our defense unit. We want to be aggressive, put pressure on opposing offenses and fly to the football.”

Roberts worked at Louisiana for two seasons before going to Baylor and spent 2007-11 as Delta State’s head coach and 2012-17 at Southeast Louisiana. Roberts was let go from Baylor by head coach Dave Aranda at the end of the 2022 season.

Freeze announced Philip Montgomery as offensive coordinator on Wednesday, an hour before Roberts. He also added Ben Aigamua (tight ends), Jake Thornton (offensive line), Jeremy Garrett (defensive line), and (secondary) Wesley McGriff since arriving on the Plains.
