‘White Lotus’ creator Mike White explains ‘shocking’ finale death

Warning: Spoilers for the second season finale of “The White Lotus” ahead.

Death never takes a holiday at the White Lotus.

As Season 2 was coming to a controversial close, “White Lotus” creator Mike White revealed Sunday that Season 3 of the sexually charged HBO drama will be set in Asia and will focus on “death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” reports Variety.

“The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” said White, 52. “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

Ahead of the Season 2 premiere, which is set in Sicily, White had indicated that he had always wanted to do a season set in Asia.

“I think it’d be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent,” White told Deadline. “You know, we did Europe, and maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun.”

Meanwhile, viewers took to social media to express outrage over Sunday’s finale — which revealed that fan-favorite character Tanya (played by Jennifer Coolidge, 61) was killed off.

“Just finished the white lotus finale,” tweeted one user alongside a video of a man punching a TV.

“Well that was a horrible ending to a very mediocre season,” another disgruntled viewer snarked. “I hope next season they bring back the entire remaining season 1 cast along with Murray Bartlett’s evil twin brother.”

“Tanya going Scarface on everyone just to derp herself to death is the most tragic and operatic ending,” another viewer chimed in. “Glad the only one who could take Tanya out was Tanya and NO MAN!!!”

"I was thinking, it'd be so fun to bring Tanya back because she's such a great character, but maybe that's the journey for her, a journey to death," revealed White.

White revealed that he always planned on killing the diva off.

“I was thinking: It’d be so fun to bring Tanya back because she’s such a great character, but maybe that’s the journey for her, a journey to death,” he told the outlet.

“Not that I really wanted to kill Tanya, because I love her as a character and obviously love Jennifer, but I just felt like, we’re going to Italy, she’s such a diva — a larger-than-life female archetype — it felt like we could motto our own operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and her story.”

As of Monday, there is no official release date for “The White Lotus” Season 3.
